A logistics and manufacturing strategy in which materials and parts are delivered close to the moment they are actually needed in production or sale, rather than stockpiled in advance. It was developed industrially as part of the Toyota Production System in Japan after the Second World War and depends on reliable, closely scheduled transport, since a shipment delayed by even a day can stop a production line with little inventory buffer to absorb the disruption.
