A cargo handling method in which wheeled cargo such as cars, trucks, trailers and railroad cars drives directly on and off a ship on its own wheels, in contrast to lift-on lift-off vessels loaded by crane. Born with the Scottish train ferry of 1850 called The Floating Railway, it makes port turnaround fast and underpins modern vehicle shipping.
