An urban planning approach that maximizes residential, business and leisure space within walking distance of public transport, pairing dense compact urban form with transit service. It seeks to raise transit ridership while reducing reliance on private cars, and took its name from Peter Calthorpe's 1993 book The Next American Metropolis.
