Crossed Rotor Blade

Russian-American aviation pioneer who, after an earlier career building fixed-wing aircraft in the Russian Empire, designed and flew the Vought-Sikorsky VS-300 in 1939, the first viable American helicopter, establishing the single-main-rotor-with-tail-rotor configuration most helicopters still use. He then developed it into the Sikorsky R-4, the world's first mass-produced helicopter, which entered service in 1942.
