German born American civil engineer who designed the Brooklyn Bridge and pioneered the use of steel wire cable for suspension bridges. He died in 1869 from tetanus following an injury sustained while surveying the bridge site, and did not live to see it completed in 1883; his son Washington Roebling oversaw construction.
