An American businessman and politician, one of the Big Four investors behind the Central Pacific Railroad, elected its president on its 1861 incorporation. As the railroad's head, he presided at the ceremonial driving of the Last Spike at Promontory, Utah on 10 May 1869, connecting the Central Pacific's track with the Union Pacific Railroad and completing the First Transcontinental Railroad. He later founded Stanford University.
