Richard Beeching, Baron Beeching (1913 to 1985) was a British physicist and industrial executive at Imperial Chemical Industries before he was brought in to chair the British Railways Board from 1963 to 1965, where he authored the two reports that recommended what became known as the Beeching cuts. Beeching pushed back on the popular nickname his reports earned him, saying he supposed he would always be looked upon as the axe man, but that it was surgery, not mad chopping.
