A British mining engineer and inventor. On 21 February 1804 his unnamed steam locomotive hauled ten tons of iron, five wagons and seventy men along the tramway of the Penydarren ironworks in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, the worlds first railway journey made by a steam powered vehicle, twenty one years before George Stephensons Stockton and Darlington Railway opened the first public steam railway.
