A canal cut through the Isthmus of Corinth in Greece, separating the Peloponnese from the mainland and linking the Gulf of Corinth to the Saronic Gulf. Completed in 1893 after a construction effort that revived a route first exploited in antiquity by the Diolkos, a stone trackway over which ships were hauled overland from the seventh century BC. Its narrow width and shallow draft now limit it mainly to smaller vessels and tourist traffic.
