A suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate strait, the entrance to San Francisco Bay, connecting the city of San Francisco to Marin County. Opened in 1937 after four years of construction under chief engineer Joseph Strauss, it was at the time both the longest and the tallest suspension bridge in the world and remains an internationally recognized symbol of San Francisco.
