Locomotion on foot, the oldest and most universal mode of human transport, still the way most short trips begin and end even in cities built around other modes. Urban planners treat it as a clear example of a sustainable mode of transport, especially suited to relatively short distances, and it forms the baseline every other mode of transport ultimately connects to.

Fossil footprint evidence from Kenya suggests hominin ancestors may have walked in broadly modern fashion as long as 3 million years before present, but this is an estimate from a single trackway, not a settled date, and bipedalism itself predates any specific dateable origin of walking as transport.
