LNER, one of the Big Four British railway companies formed by the 1923 grouping that merged Britains many smaller pre-existing railways into four large regional companies. It operated the East Coast Main Line between London and Scotland and built and ran the locomotive Flying Scotsman. It was nationalized into British Railways in 1948.
