A steamboat built by Robert Fulton, popularly known as the Clermont after one of the estates it was associated with. It began regular passenger service on the Hudson River between New York City and Albany in 1807, the first commercially successful steamboat line, proving that steam navigation could be run as an ordinary business rather than an experiment.
