A supersonic passenger airliner developed jointly by Britain and France, built by the British Aircraft Corporation and Aerospatiale under an intergovernmental treaty. It entered commercial service in 1976 and cruised at roughly Mach 2, more than twice the speed of sound, cutting the London to New York flight time to about three and a half hours. High operating costs, limited seating and a fatal 2000 crash led to its retirement in 2003; it remains the only supersonic airliner to see sustained commercial service.
