The EMD SD40-2 is a six-axle, C-C wheel arrangement diesel-electric freight locomotive introduced in January 1972 as part of the Electro-Motive Division's Dash 2 series, built by EMD, General Motors Diesel and, for export, MACOSA and EVSA. Powered by a 16-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine producing 3,000 horsepower, it weighed about 368,000 pounds, measured 68 feet 10 inches long and ran up to 65 miles per hour. Production continued from January 1972 to October 1989, with a final SDL40-2 variant built in January 1997, for a total of 4,036 units. The SD40-2 became one of the best-selling locomotive models in EMD's history, edged out only by the GP9, and served as the standard of the North American freight railroading industry for several decades on the strength of its reliability and versatility.
