British-Canadian shipping magnate who won the first British transatlantic steamship mail contract and founded what became the Cunard Line. Its first ship, the Britannia, sailed from Liverpool to Halifax and on to Boston in 1840, establishing regular, scheduled passenger and cargo steamship service across the North Atlantic where sailing ships had kept only an unreliable schedule.
