Wernher von Braun led the development of German rocket technology during the Second World War, work carried out under the Nazi regime that this atlas records rather than smooths over. After the war he moved to the United States, where he developed missiles for the Army and then designed the Saturn V rocket for NASA, becoming the chief architect of the vehicle that carried astronauts to the Moon.
