A major American airline, founded in 1927, that pioneered numerous transoceanic air routes and was for decades the unofficial flag carrier of the United States on international routes. It was the launch customer for the Boeing 747, flying the type into scheduled service in January 1970. Financial difficulties following industry deregulation and rising fuel costs led to its closure in 1991.
