The safety bicycle replaced the penny-farthing as the dominant bicycle design beginning in the late 1880s, using a chain-driven rear wheel and two similarly sized wheels close to the ground to make cycling far safer than on the old high wheelers. John Kemp Starley brought out the first commercially successful example, the Rover, in 1885, and the safety bicycle's basic layout is the direct ancestor of the modern bicycle.
